Brief Description SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
Detailed Description 12:38 PM EDT Tuesday 27 August 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: Sarnia - Petrolia - Western Lambton County A heat event continues today. Maximum temperatures are expected to be between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures are expected to be between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius. Humidex values will be in the high thirties to low forties. Cooler temperatures are expected by Wednesday. Extreme heat can affect everyone?s health. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. Watches 2:20 PM EDT Tuesday 27 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Sarnia - Petrolia - Western Lambton County Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail. Hazards: Wind gusts up to 100 km/h. Toonie sized hail. Risk of tornadoes. Timing: Tonight. Discussion: Atmospheric conditions could allow for the development of thunderstorms this afternoon. These thunderstorms are expected to remain below severe thresholds, however, there is a threat for severe thunderstorms this evening and overnight as more organized thunderstorms move over the area. These thunderstorms may be accompanied by wind gusts of 100 km/h and toonie sized hail. There is also a risk of tornadoes. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Locally heavy rain is also possible. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
