| Detailed Description | 5:03 PM EDT Tuesday 9 July 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: Burlington - Oakville A heat event continues this afternoon. Daytime highs are expected to be near 31 degrees Celsius with humidex values of 35 to 38. Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category. A cooler airmass is expected to arrive tonight. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. Hazards: Rainfall totals of 40 to 60 mm, with locally higher amounts possible. Torrential downpours giving rainfall rates of 20 to 40 mm per hour at times. Timing: Beginning overnight or Wednesday morning, and ending Thursday. Discussion: Periods of heavy rainfall associated with the remnants of Hurricane Beryl will affect portions of southern Ontario beginning overnight or Wednesday morning. Although confidence in the exact track of the weather system remains somewhat uncertain, these type of systems in the past have given very high rainfall rates in torrential downpours. Rainfall amounts will likely be highly variable across the region, and some areas may receive in excess of 60 mm. Conditions should improve Thursday. For information concerning flooding, please consult your local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office. Visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
