3:34 AM CDT Saturday 11 May 2024 Winter Storm Warning in effect for: Arviat Hazardous winter conditions are expected. Strong spring storm to impact southern Kivalliq on Saturday. Hazards: Freezing rain, heavy snow with up to 10 cm accumulation, strong wind gusts possibly in excess of 80 km/h. Timing: Overnight Friday into Saturday. Conditions improving Saturday evening. Remarks: A strong low pressure system approaching from the west will spread an area of freezing rain into Arviat Saturday morning. The freezing rain may be heavy at times, accumulating on surfaces, and may result in power outages. Saturday afternoon, the freezing rain will transition to heavy snow. Strong winds will accompany the falling snow giving reduced visibilities in blowing snow. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
