Brief Description TORNADO WATCH
Detailed Description 2:36 PM EDT Saturday 27 July 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Dryden - Vermilion Bay At 1:35 PM CDT (1:35 p.m. EST), Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to toonie size hail and heavy rain. This severe thunderstorm is located near Northwest Bay, moving east at 80 km/h. Hazard: Toonie size hail and 110 km/h wind gusts. A tornado is also possible. Locations impacted include: Lake Despair, Jackfish Lake, Northwest Bay, Cuttle Lake and Otukamamoan Lake. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Maximum daytime temperatures of near 30 degrees Celsius are expected, with humidex values approaching 37. Overnight minimum temperatures will be 17 to 20 degrees Celsius. There is a possibility that showers and thunderstorms may keep maximum daytime temperatures a few degrees cooler today and Sunday for parts of northwestern Ontario. At this time, a cooler and less humid airmass is expected to arrive Sunday night. Extreme heat can affect everyone?s health. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Watches 11:57 AM EDT Saturday 27 July 2024 Tornado Watch in effect for: Dryden - Vermilion Bay Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes. Strong winds, large hail and heavy rain are also possible. Hazards: Risk of a tornado. Strong wind gusts up to 110 km/h. Ping pong ball sized hail. Timing: Early this afternoon into this evening. Discussion: An approaching upper disturbance may trigger severe thunderstorms. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area, it is recommended you take the following actions: Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes.
