5:39 PM MDT Friday 23 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Wheatland Co. near Strathmore Lyalta and Carseland Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail. Severe thunderstorms are currently in northern Montana, and have caused up to 125 km/h wind gusts in some parts of the state. These thunderstorms are tracking very quickly to the north. As these thunderstorms cross the US border into Alberta, widespread severe winds are expected. Watches may continue to be expanded to the north as the situation develops. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
