10:05 PM EDT Wednesday 22 May 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Bracebridge - Gravenhurst At 10:04 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to toonie size hail. This cluster of severe thunderstorms is located from 9 kilometres northeast of Coldwater to 15 kilometres southwest of Bass Lake Provincial Park to Kempenfelt Bay, moving northeast at 35 km/h. Hazard: Up to toonie size hail 90 km/h wind gusts. Locations impacted include: Orillia, Bass Lake Provincial Park, Mara Provincial Park, Washago, McRae Point Provincial Park, Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial, Hawkestone, Maple Valley, Sparrow Lake, Lake Couchiching, Kilworthy, Rathburn, Udney, Lewisham, Lakewood, Uphill, Head Lake, Black Lake, Moore Lake and Deep Bay. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Hazards: 100 km/h wind gusts Toonie sized hail Risk of a tornado Timing: This evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms continue this evening, but should slowly weaken as the evening progresses. The main threat will be strong winds and hail. However, a tornado will also be possible. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
