| Detailed Description | 4:38 PM EDT Tuesday 13 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Kapuskasing - Hearst - Smooth Rock Falls At 4:38 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail. This area of severe thunderstorms is located from north of Harty to 40 kilometres south of Hearst to north of Smooth Rock Falls, moving southeast at 45 km/h. Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts and nickel size hail. Locations impacted include: Kapuskasing, Groundhog River Waterway Provincial Park, Harty, Lepage, Moonbeam, Fauquier, Grégoires Mill and Strickland. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Hazards: 90 km/h wind gusts. Nickel sized hail. Timing: This afternoon through this evening. Discussion: Scattered thunderstorms have developed that may be capable of producing 90 km/h wind gusts and nickel sized hail. These storms will dissipate this evening as daytime heating comes to an end. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.
