| Detailed Description | 8:21 PM CDT Thursday 11 July 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Island Lake At 8:20 PM CDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to toonie size hail and heavy rain. A large line of thunderstorms continues to track eastward over Island Lake. This line will move into Ontario by 9:30 pm. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. To report severe weather, send an email to MBstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #MBStorm . 2:39 PM CDT Thursday 11 July 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: Island Lake An upper level ridge has settled over the prairies resulting in clear skies and extreme daytime temperatures along with warm overnight lows. Daytime high temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius along with overnight low temperatures of 16 degrees Celsius will persist through tonight. Temperatures will moderate on Friday. Extreme heat can affect everyone?s health. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Reduce your heat risk. Schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day. Limit direct sun exposure. Shade yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed, breathable hat and/or an umbrella. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Watch for early signs of heat illness (feeling unwell, fatigue, thirst, headache) as these can rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies. Move to a cooler environment immediately, such as a shaded or air-conditioned space. Keep your house cool. Turn on your air conditioning (if possible), block the sun by closing curtains or blinds, or relocate to a cooler location such as a basement or public cooling centre. All workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool or shaded space. Extreme heat affects everyone. Heat illnesses are preventable. To reduce the health effects of heat: - Take a cool shower or bath or take a break in a cool location, such as an air-conditioned building or a tree-shaded area. - Stay out of direct sunlight and wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and a wide-brimmed hat or shade yourself with an umbrella. - Drink plenty of water, before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. If you must go out, take water with you. - Keep your house cool. Block the sun out by closing curtains, blinds, and awnings during the day - Never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle. - Check on family, friends and neighbours. Check regularly on people living alone, especially older individuals or people with health conditions. Make sure they are cool and drinking water. - Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, and the worsening of some health conditions. - Watch for signs of heat stroke (which may begin with headache, hot skin, dizziness or confusion) and take action immediately. Watches 3:20 PM CDT Thursday 11 July 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Island Lake Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Thunderstorms have developed this afternoon and will continue this evening. Potential rainfall rates: 50 mm Potential wind gusts: 110 km/h Potential hail size: 4 cm Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.
