| Detailed Description | 4:28 AM CST Thursday 25 July 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: R.M. of Biggar including Biggar and Springwater One final day of extreme heat is expected for southern Saskatchewan. Daytime high temperatures will reach 32 degrees Celsius and above once again Thursday. Humidity will also be noticeable, with humidex values likely exceeding 38. A slow-moving ridge of high pressure has been responsible for the extreme heat in Saskatchewan. A reprieve from the heat will begin as a cold front passes through the province Thursday night. Cooler temperatures will arrive Friday. Stay out of the sun during the peak hours of 11 AM - 3 p.m., whenever possible. If you need to be outside, wear appropriate sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and light, loose-fitting cotton clothes. Avoid any extreme physical exertion and keep in the shade whenever possible. Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as you can. If you do not have air conditioning at home, know where to go to cool down. Air-conditioned public spaces include malls, leisure centres, libraries, etc. Stay hydrated with cold water and cold drinks. Check on neighbours, family and friends and have someone do the same for you. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Fast moving thunderstorms are developing in southwestern Saskatchewan this afternoon and are moving rapidly northeastward. Some of these thunderstorms may become severe. Thunderstorm activity will expand across southern Saskatchewan through the night. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
