Brief Description Flood Warning
Detailed Description * WHAT. Minor flooding caused by upstream dam release is ongoing. * WHERE. A portion of Gaston and Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina. * WHEN. Until 200 AM EDT Wednesday. * IMPACTS. Several docks, access areas, swimming areas, and low-lying residential yards are likely flooding. Some outbuildings, campgrounds, and roads may be impacted with shallow flooding. Residents are encouraged to heed guidance from local officials and emergency management on any potential impacts to property. Drivers are encouraged to heed any barricades and avoid all flooded areas. * At 103.0 feet. Minor Flood Stage. Significant inundation of low-lying areas is ongoing around Mountain Island Lake and downstream of the dam along/near Riverside Dr. Some outbuilding inundation may begin. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS. - At 737 PM EDT, Mountain Island Lake levels have receded below Moderate Flood Stage following the devastating rainfall observed from a combination of tropical moisture interacting with a stationary front and Hurricane Helene. Approximately 6 to 25 (twenty-five) inches of rain fell from last Wednesday evening to early Friday afternoon from Lake Hickory to the Catawba River headwaters, with the highest totals exceeding 2 feet along the Blue Ridge Escarpment across the upper Catawba River watershed. This resulted in catastrophic and historic inflows into Catawba River reservoirs, resulting in tragically devastating flooding along the Catawba River system to Lake Norman and Cowans Ford Dam to Mountain Island Lake and points downstream. - Nuisance residual flooding of the lake shoreline as well as Minor flooding below Mountain Island Dam near Riverside Dr, Lake Dr, and Mountain Island Park will continue through late Tuesday. At that time, lake and river levels will gradually recede back below critical levels. A Flood Warning will remain in effect until this time. - The latest pool elevation for Mountain Island Lake is 103.48 and is falling slowly. Mountain Island Lake crested at 107.88 feet on September 28, 2024 at 8:00 pm. This exceeds the modern-day record of 106.91 feet observed on June 10, 2019, but remains below the historic record of 109.60 feet observed in August of 1940. - Please stay weather aware and monitor lake levels and Duke Energy projections closely for any changes. - For more information on lake levels or dam releases, people are encouraged to visit http://lakes.duke-energy.com or call 1-800-829-5253. - Residents along and below Mountain Island Lake are encouraged to stay aware of the latest updates from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management by signing up for Char-Meck Alerts at: www.charmeckalerts.com - Caution is advised anywhere near the Catawba River from Cowans Ford Dam to the Lake Wylie inlet. - Http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
