| Detailed Description | 5:47 AM EDT Monday 17 June 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: Kirkland Lake - Temiskaming Shores - Temagami Elevated heat and humidity is expected for several days beginning today. Daytime highs today through Wednesday are expected to be 28 to 33 degrees Celsius with humidex values of 36 to 42. There will be little relief through the overnight as lows are expected to be 17 to 20 degrees Celsius with humidex values of 25 to 30. Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category. Extreme heat can affect everyone?s health. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Watch for early signs of heat illness (feeling unwell, fatigue, thirst, headache) as these can rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies. Move to a cooler environment immediately, such as a shaded or air-conditioned space. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. Watches 1:51 PM EDT Monday 17 June 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Kirkland Lake - Temiskaming Shores - Temagami Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail. Hazards: Strong wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Nickel to ping pong ball size hail. Timing: Late this afternoon into this evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms over upper Michigan are expected to track across northeastern Ontario later this afternoon. There is potential for some of these storms to become severe. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
