| Detailed Description | 3:59 PM ADT Thursday 20 June 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: Antigonish County Humidex values reaching 36 will continue. A period of very warm and humid weather continues. Time span: ending this evening Minimum temperature tonight: 15 to 18 degrees Celsius. Locations: Nova Scotia. Remarks: Temperatures are expected to gradually diminish to below warning level this evening. Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Watch for early signs of heat illness - feeling unwell, fatigue, thirst, headache - all these can rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies. Move to a cooler environment immediately, such as a shaded or air-conditioned space. Heat stroke is a medical emergency! Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you or someone you are caring for has a high body temperature and is either confused, has stopped sweating or becomes unconscious. While waiting for help, cool the person right away: move them to a cool place, apply cold water to large areas of the skin and fan the person as much as possible. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. All workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool or shaded space. Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Issued by Environment Canada and the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness Watches 5:14 PM ADT Thursday 20 June 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Antigonish County Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain. Potential rainfall rates: 25 to 50 mm per hour in thunderstorms. Potential wind gusts: 70 to 90 km/h or higher in thunderstorms. Locations: central mainland Nova Scotia. Time span: ending later this evening. Remarks: Strong thunderstorms may develop this evening along a cold front as it moves south across the Maritimes. Localized heavy downpours and very strong wind gusts may accompany some of these thunderstorms. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
