Invest 90W is now centered directly south-southeast of Yap Proper near 8.6N 138.8E, and JTWC has issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert, meaning development into a significant tropical cyclone is possible within the next 12 to 24 hours. This will keep Yap and Palau in a region of locally heavy showers, thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds for the rest of Sunday through Monday. The system is moving northwest and model guidance shows 90W pushing through the area quickly. A Small Craft Advisory will be issued for Yap,and other advisories, watches, or warnings may follow. Scatterometry shows an area of winds of 25-32 knots southeast of the center, but higher winds and gusts are possible as 90W crosses the area, especially for Yap State. If 90W develops into a tropical depression within the next few hours, be alert for any watches or warnings issued. Folks across Yap State and and the Republic of Palau should monitor local weather forecasts from the National Weather Service in Guam, and for additional information from your local Weather Service Office and emergency management.
