9:13 AM MDT Friday 24 May 2024 Freezing Rain Warning in effect for: Inuvik Region An area of freezing rain will sweep through the Mackenzie Delta Friday bringing significant ice build-up and slippery conditions. Freezing rain has already begun over the region and will move to the north coast by this evening. Freezing rain will continue over parts of the Delta until early Saturday morning. Some areas may see up to 5 mm of ice build up on cold surfaces. The surface temperature will be near freezing. There may be many changes between freezing rain, snow and heavy rain by the time the precipitation tapers off Saturday morning. Surfaces such as roads and walkways may become icy and slippery. Extended and widespread utility outages are possible. Travel is not recommended. Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces. Rain will move into the area late this morning. The rain will transition to snow tonight night before tapering off Saturday morning. The surface temperature will be near freezing. Some of this rain may freeze on contact with cold surface leading to slippery conditions. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
