| Detailed Description | 5:15 PM MDT Sunday 18 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Clearwater Co. near Nordegg and Big Horn Res. At 5:14 PM MDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, nickel to ping pong ball size hail and heavy rain. This thunderstorm is 30 km east of Abraham lake, crossing the Forestry Trunk Road, and is heading to the northeast at 35 km/h. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Conditions are favourable for the development of very dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, destructive hail and torrential rain. Thunderstorms are expected to develop along the foothills this evening. These thunderstorms will move eastward through the evening and may continue overnight. Extremely large hail can smash windows, destroy property and vehicles and cause life-threatening injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
