| Detailed Description | 5:58 PM PDT Friday 23 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: South Thompson Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and heavy rain. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm . Statements 8:10 PM PDT Friday 23 August 2024 Special Weather Statement in effect for: South Thompson Rain, at times heavy, is expected. Where: South Thompson, Eastern Fraser Valley, Whistler, and Pemberton. When: Tonight into Saturday. Total amounts: 20 to 30 mm except 40 mm in heaviest rain. Remarks: A low pressure system currently off the Oregon Coast will move inland today then track across southern BC this evening. Rain, at times heavy, will begin this evening then taper off to a few showers on Saturday afternoon. Make sure to follow DriveBC recommendations for travel and road conditions, and keep an eye on weather radar for the latest information on rain and thunderstorm activity. Enhanced risk of landslides in vulnerable areas, particularly those affected by recent wildfires (burn scars). The combination of heavy rainfall and potentially unstable soils could trigger landslides or debris flows, posing potential hazards to public safety, infrastructure and natural landscapes. The anticipated high precipitation rates over a short duration could lead to water pooling in areas with poor drainage, exacerbating localized flooding concerns.
