10:50 PM MDT Friday 23 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: M.D. of Bighorn near Canmore Exshaw and Ghost Lake At 10:49 PM MDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, nickel to ping pong ball size hail and heavy rain. This line of severe thunderstorms runs from near the BC border, across north Calgary to near Standard and is moving to the north at 70 km/h. Winds may arrive well ahead of the actual thunderstorms. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Thunderstorms are progressing through southern Alberta, and some of these thunderstorms may be severe. These thunderstorms are tracking very quickly to the north. Watches may continue to be expanded to the north as the situation develops. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Locally heavy rain is also possible. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.
