| Detailed Description | 10:43 AM EDT Tuesday 16 July 2024 Rainfall Warning in effect for: Vaughan - Richmond Hill - Markham Heavy rain is expected. Hazards: Rainfall amounts up to 100 mm. Rainfall rates of 40 mm an hour. Timing: This morning into early this afternoon. Discussion: Heavy rain is expected this morning with showers and thunderstorms. Total rainfall amounts of up to 100 mm are possible with rainfall rates of 40 mm within an hour. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Abandon stalled cars if water is rising rapidly. Don''t approach washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks. Consider moving valuable items to higher levels. Watches 9:56 AM EDT Tuesday 16 July 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Vaughan - Richmond Hill - Markham Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain. Hazards: Wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Local rainfall amounts up to 50 mm possible. Up to nickel size hail. Timing: This morning into early this afternoon. Discussion: Thunderstorms are tracking eastward over southern Ontario and may produce isolated damaging wind gusts, torrential downpours and large hail. Thunderstorms will move east of the area by mid day, however, the threat of heavy rain will persist for much of the day. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
