Brief Description Flood Advisory
Detailed Description Heavy rain moving back into the region will cause rivers and small streams to rise and go above minor flood stage through Wednesday from the rainfall runoff. Most water levels are expected to drop below flood stage by Thursday morning but Mendenhall Lake and River will lag behind the smaller streams to be below flood stage late Thursday afternoon to evening time frame. There is still no indication that water is draining from Suicide Basin. * WHAT. Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues. * WHERE. Mendenhall Lake and River, Montana Creek and Jordan Creek near Areas Around Auke Lake, Montana Creek, Skaters Cabin Road, Mendenhall Campground, View Drive And Jordan Creek Mall. * WHEN. Until 1000 AM AKDT Thursday. * IMPACTS. Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Some low-water crossings may become impassable. River or stream flows are elevated. Soils remain moist and excessive runoff will result in minor flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, other low-lying areas, and flood-prone locations. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS. - At 350 AM AKDT, satellite estimates indicate heavy rain will move across the advisory area primarily on Wednesday. Rapid river rises will cause minor flooding, especially Montana Creek and Jordan Creek. Water levels will rise more slowly and cause minor flooding along Mendenhall lake and Auke Lake. Storm rainfall amounts of 1.75 to 3 inches are possible. The expected rainfall rate is around 0.20 inches per 1 hour. - Auke Lake is still hovering near minor flood stage and is expected to come back up as the area gets more substantial rainfall, once again. - For Auke Lake near Auke Bay: At 3:00am the stage was 32.7 feet. Flood Stage is 33.0 feet. Impacts: At 33.0 feet: Water from the lake will inundate yards of homes along Auke Lake. At 34.0 feet: Water depths will be near 1.5 feet in yards of homes along Auke Lake with some water reaching into homes along the northwest side of the lake. - For Jordan Creek near Juneau: At 3:00am the stage was 9.3 feet. Flood Stage is 9.7 feet. Forecast: A crest around 10.4 feet is expected around 10:00pm Wednesday. Water levels will go above minor flood stage around 8:00am Wednesday. Water levels will go below minor flood stage around 10:00am Thursday. Impacts: At 9.2 feet: This is the stage when Jordan Creek is at bankfull and water will begin to inundate areas along the edges of the creek near Race Reality and Jordan Square. At 9.7 feet: Water will inundate the Jordan Square's front and back parking lots, around Jordan Creek office condominiums with up to one foot of water. Some residential driveways will be flooded and cut off. At 10.5 feet: There will be some inundation of structures and roads near Jordan Creek with more than one foot of water. Some residential homes and commercial offices along the creek will see significant flooding. - For Montana Creek at Back Loop Bridge: At 3:00am the stage was 12.0 feet. Flood Stage is 14.5 feet. Forecast: A crest around 15.5 feet is expected around 4:00pm Wednesday. Water levels will go above minor flood stage around 10:00am Wednesday. Water levels will go below minor flood stage Wednesday evening. Impacts: At 14.5 feet: Water begins flowing over the low water crossing on Montana Creek Road. Bankfull conditions at the gauge with water starting to inundate adjacent undeveloped fields along Mendenhall Loop Road. At 15.5 feet: Up to one half foot of water will flow over the low water crossing on Montana Creek Road after the community gardens. Water will approach and begin to inundate yards of residences along the Northwest side of Mendenhall Loop Road. - For Mendenhall Lake: At 3:00am the stage was 6.6 feet. Flood Stage is 9.0 feet. Forecast: A crest around 9.8 feet is expected around 4:00am Thursday. Water levels will go above minor flood stage around 4:00pm Wednesday. Water levels will go below minor flood stage around 6:00pm Thursday. Impacts: At 6.7 feet: Nugget Falls trail begins to flood near the "causeway" at the end of the trail. At 7.7 feet: Nugget Falls trail begins to flood near the beginning of the trail. Along the Mendenhall River some sections will experience bank erosion resulting in dangerous tree fall. These conditions could make floating the river more hazardous with the higher water levels. At 9.0 feet: Water starts to cover Skaters Cabin Road between Skaters Cabin and West Glacier Trailhead, also water will flow into the Mendenhall Lake Campground. At 9.5 feet: Areas along View Dr will start to flood and cause minor flooding of yards. There will be 0.5 feet of water over the Skaters Cabin Road between Skaters Cabin and West Glacier Trailhead. Campsite 7 will be flooded with water starting to flow over the road between campsites 8 and 9 in the Mendenhall Campground. At 10.0 feet: Water levels will inundate Mendenhall Campground with up to 3 feet of water covering low areas as well as up to 1.5 feet of water covering Skaters Cabin Road. Portions of West Glacier Trail will be impassable. - The forecasted rains amounts could swamp boats. Mariners should check their vessels.
