4:05 PM EDT Sunday 28 July 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Attawapiskat At 4:05 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain. This line of severe thunderstorms is located from 25 kilometres west of Attawapiskat to 55 kilometres west of Fort Albany, moving northeast at 50 km/h. Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts, nickel size hail and torrential rainfall of 50 mm. Locations impacted include: Attawapiskat. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Maximum daytime temperatures of near 30 degrees Celsius are expected, with humidex values approaching 37. Overnight minimum temperatures will be 17 to 20 degrees Celsius. There is a possibility that showers and thunderstorms may keep maximum daytime temperatures a few degrees cooler today for parts of northwestern Ontario. At this time, a cooler and less humid airmass is expected to arrive tonight. Extreme heat can affect everyone?s health. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Hazards: Torrential downpours with 50 mm falling within an hour. Strong wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Nickel to ping-pong sized hail. Risk of a tornado. Timing: Today through this evening.
