2:33 PM EDT Monday 5 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Simcoe - Delhi - Norfolk At 2:33 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, pea to dime size hail and heavy rain. This severe thunderstorm is located 5 kilometres southwest of Mount Salem, moving east at 50 km/h. Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts and heavy rain. A tornado is also possible. Locations impacted include: Shedden, Port Stanley, Port Bruce Provincial Park, Port Burwell Provincial Park, Iona, Fingal, Dexter, Sparta, Port Bruce, Mount Salem, Malahide, Port Burwell, Vienna, Straffordville and Glen Meyer. Fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Hazards: Wind gusts up to 100 km/h Nickel to toonie sized hail Torrential rainfall giving totals possibly exceeding 50 mm. Timing: This afternoon into early evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms will likely affect areas near and north of Lake Erie today. Some of these thunderstorms may become severe. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
