| Detailed Description | 5:44 PM EDT Monday 20 May 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Newmarket - Georgina - Northern York Region At 5:44 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail. There are two severe thunderstorms in the area. The first severe thunderstorm is located near Oro moving east at 45 km/h. Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts and nickel size hail. Locations impacted include: Barrie, Innisfil, Little Lake, Oro, Kempenfelt Bay, Hawkestone and Georgina Island. A second severe thunderstorm is located 5 kilometres southwest of Cookstown, moving east at 35 km/h. Hazard: Toonie size hail and 90 km/h wind gusts. Locations impacted include: Bradford, Cookstown, Keswick, Deerhurst, Gilford and Maple Hill. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Locally heavy rain is also possible. Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Watches 6:09 PM EDT Monday 20 May 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Uxbridge - Beaverton - Northern Durham Region Newmarket - Georgina - Northern York Region Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail. Hazards: Wind gusts near 90 km/h. Nickel size hail. Timing: Continuing this evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms over southern Ontario are expected to continue this evening. Some of these thunderstorms may reach severe limits. Thunderstorms are expected to weaken later this evening. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Locally heavy rain is also possible.
