| Detailed Description | 4:45 AM EDT Wednesday 10 July 2024 Rainfall Warning in effect for: Niagara Falls - Welland - Southern Niagara Region Rainfall with embedded torrential downpours expected. Hazards: Rainfall totals of 40 to 60 mm, with locally higher amounts possible. Torrential downpours giving rainfall rates of 20 to 40 mm per hour at times. Timing: This morning to Thursday morning. The heaviest rain will occur today into this evening. Discussion: Periods of heavy rainfall associated with the remnants of Hurricane Beryl will move into southern Ontario this morning. These types of weather systems can give very high rainfall rates in torrential downpours. Rainfall amounts will likely be highly variable across the region, and some areas may receive in excess of 60 mm. Rain will taper to scattered showers from west to east tonight through early Thursday morning. For information concerning flooding, please consult your local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office. Visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watches 10:45 AM EDT Wednesday 10 July 2024 Tornado Watch in effect for: Niagara Falls - Welland - Southern Niagara Region Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes. Strong winds and heavy rain are also possible. Hazards: Risk of a tornado. Strong wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Heavy downpours. Timing: This afternoon and evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and will continue into the evening. There is the potential for these thunderstorms to become severe during this time frame, with the risk of a tornado as a primary threat. Strong winds gusts and torrential downpours are also possible. This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area, it is recommended you take the following actions: Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes.
