Brief Description SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
Detailed Description 6:15 PM PDT Monday 22 July 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Cariboo - north including Quesnel At 6:15 PM PDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain. The area of severe thunderstorms includes Highway 97 south of Quesnel and the region to the west including Baker Creek, Nazko, and Rosita Lake. These storms are moving northwards at 50 km/h. Notably, the communities along Highway 97 including Quesnel is expected to be impacted within the hour. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm . 4:24 PM PDT Monday 22 July 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: Cariboo - north including Quesnel This is a heat warning. Elevated temperatures are expected and there is a moderate risk to public health. Where: 100 Mile, Cariboo, North Thompson, Yellowhead, North Columbia and Kinbasket. When: Hot conditions continuing tonight. What: Daytime highs in the 30s. Remarks: As the ridge shifts eastward, a gradual cooling trend is expected to begin tonight. Check on family, friends and neighbours, who are at higher risk, particularly if they live alone, to make sure they have a cool space. Watch for early signs of heat illness (feeling unwell, fatigue, thirst, headache, unusually dark urine) as these can rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies. Move to a cooler environment immediately, such as a shaded or air-conditioned space. Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Watch for early signs of heat illness (feeling unwell, fatigue, thirst, headache, unusually dark urine) as these can rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies. Ask a health professional, such as a pharmacist or physician, how medications or health conditions can affect your risk in the heat. Anyone working in the heat should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool or shaded space. Never leave susceptible people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. If you are in an overheated area, seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, splash pad, misting station, or air-conditioned spot like a public building.
