| Detailed Description | 4:30 PM ADT Sunday 4 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Halifax Metro and Halifax County West At 4:30 PM ADT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain. A cluster of thunderstorms over Annapolis, Kings, Lunenburg, Hants and Halifax counties are travelling eastward at 50 km/h. Rainfall rates of 35 mm per hour or higher and total rainfall of 50 to 70 mm are occurring. Hail of 2 cm or more is possible. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Very warm and humid conditions to continue. Time span: ending Monday night. Minimum overnight temperatures tonight: 18 to 21 degrees Celsius. Maximum daytime temperatures on Monday: 27 to 28 degrees Celsius (Humidex 36), except cooler along parts of the coast. Locations: all of Nova Scotia except Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby counties. Remarks: A combination of very warm temperatures and elevated humidity will create very high humidex values again tomorrow. Temperatures will begin to cool on Monday night. Extreme heat can affect everyone?s health. Check several times a day on older family, friends and neighbours. Make sure they are cool and drinking water. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. A cluster of thunderstorms currently over western Nova Scotia are travelling eastward. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
