Brief Description SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
Detailed Description 5:26 AM EDT Sunday 25 August 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: Sandy Lake - Weagamow Lake - Deer Lake Heat event will continue today. Maximum temperatures are expected to be near 30 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures will be near 18 degrees Celsius. Humidex values will range from 34 to 37. Cooler temperatures are expected by tonight. Extreme heat can affect everyone?s health. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm . Watches 12:00 noon EDT Sunday 25 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Sandy Lake - Weagamow Lake - Deer Lake Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Hazards: Wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h Torrential downpours producing up to 50 mm within a few hours Nickel to golf ball size hail Risk of tornadoes Timing: This afternoon and evening Discussion: Thunderstorms moving eastward from Manitoba are expected to arrive this afternoon. The main hazards are wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h and torrential downpours. Nickel to golf ball size hail is also possible. A tornado cannot be ruled out. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm .
