4:47 AM MDT Thursday 18 July 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: M.D. of Bighorn near Canmore Exshaw and Ghost Lake A prolonged heat event continues. For the next 5 to 7 days, daytime highs will be between 28 and 36 degrees Celsius and overnight lows will range from 12 to 20 degrees Celsius. Residents of and visitors to the warned regions are advised to take the following precautions to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours: - Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day. - Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible. - Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated. - Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time. Monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness. Pay particular attention to individuals that can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat including infants, children, seniors, and individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers, as well as those who are socially isolated. Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Watches 2:27 PM MDT Thursday 18 July 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: M.D. of Bighorn near Canmore Exshaw and Ghost Lake Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and heavy rain. Thunderstorms have developed. Some of these thunderstorms are nearly stationary, and may produce severe rainfall amounts as high as 50 mm in an hour. Large accumulations of small hail are also possible. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
