Brief Description Special Weather Statement
Detailed Description The slowly-developing tropical disturbance, known as JTWC Invest 95W, is now north of Pohnpei, in the vicinity of 8N158E. At the surface, the latest analysis reveals a sharp surface trough, with perhaps a small closed circulation near a burst of convection. The latest CIMSS tropical vorticity analysis shows vorticity maxima in this area between 850mb and 500mb that is expected to move farther west into a more favorable environment for cyclogenesis. Even so, this feature remains largely disorganized in nature. Convection associated directly with this feature is now west and northwest of Pohnpei, along the trough, so risk for gusty winds and flooding due to locally heavy showers is diminishing for Pohnpei. This disturbance is expected to develop a much more pronounced center of rotation as early as Sunday, as the system continues to move away from Pohnpei and into Chuuk State. Numerical model guidance indicates 95W will consolidate and intensify through the first half of next week, with most of this development to happen as it starts to exit Chuuk State to the northwest across eastern Yap State and/or the Marianas. For Pohnpei, isolated to scattered showers and light to gentle winds are expected through Monday night. A ITCZ-like pattern is then expected to build across eastern Micronesia increasing showers and thunderstorms at Pohnpei around the middle of the upcoming week. This will be the last issuance of the Special Weather Statement for Pohnpei, unless conditions change.
