| Detailed Description | 4:37 PM EDT Tuesday 16 July 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Kitchener - Cambridge - Region of Waterloo Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain. Hazards: Strong wind gusts approaching 90 km/h. Rainfall amounts approaching 30 mm. Timing: This afternoon into this evening. Discussion: Another round of thunderstorms is expected late this afternoon into this evening. These thunderstorms are expected to be more isolated in nature compared to thunderstorms from this morning. The primary threat with these thunderstorms is expected to be strong wind gusts. Should multiple thunderstorms track over the same location, rainfall amounts of 30 mm are possible. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Hail is also possible. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
