| Detailed Description | 3:26 PM MDT Wednesday 17 July 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: North Slave Region including Wekweeti - Whati - Behchoko A prolonged heat event continues. Daytime highs will be between 28 and 35 degrees Celsius. Overnight lows will range from 14 to 20 degrees Celsius and will not provide much relief from the daytime heat. The heat is generally expected to remain for the duration of this week for areas near Great Slave Lake with some regions persisting into next week. For areas along the northern Mackenzie river, heat warnings are expected to end by Thursday morning. Extreme heat can affect everyone?s health. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Heat stroke is a medical emergency! Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you or someone you are caring for has a high body temperature and are confused, has stopped sweating or becomes unconscious. While waiting for help, cool the person right away: move them to a cool place, apply cold water to large areas of the skin and fan the person as much as possible. Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
