Brief Description HEAT WARNING
Detailed Description 11:43 AM EDT Saturday 22 June 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: Kitchener - Cambridge - Region of Waterloo A prolonged heat event is expected to continue today. Daytime highs are expected to be in the 28 to 31 degree Celsius range with humidex values near 40. There will be little relief through the overnight as lows are expected to be 18 to 21 degrees Celsius. Less hot and humid conditions are expected to slowly move into the area on Sunday. There is some uncertainty regarding how quick this cooler and drier airmass will move in so heat warnings may persist for some areas through the Sunday. Temperatures and humidex values may be several degrees cooler near the shores of the Great Lakes. Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category. Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Heat stroke is a medical emergency! Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you or someone you are caring for has a high body temperature and is confused, has stopped sweating or becomes unconscious. While waiting for help, cool the person right away: move them to a cool place, apply cold water to large areas of the skin and fan the person as much as possible. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm . Watches 12:28 PM EDT Saturday 22 June 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Waterloo - Wellington Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Hazards: Wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Nickel to toonie size hail. Torrential downpours. Risk of tornadoes. Timing: This afternoon into this evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms will develop this afternoon. The main hazards will be torrential downpours and strong wind gusts. A secondary threat will be hail up to toonie size. Tornadoes cannot be ruled out, particularly west of the Golden Horseshoe and for areas south of Georgian Bay. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm .
