Brief Description SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
Detailed Description 12:31 PM EDT Tuesday 27 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Greater Sudbury and vicinity At 12:31 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts and heavy rain. This line of severe thunderstorms is located from 25 kilometres southeast of Gogama to 9 kilometres south of Metagama to 15 kilometres southwest of Kindiogami Lake, moving east at 60 km/h. Hazard: 100 km/h wind gusts. Locations impacted include: Distant Lake, Lac aux Sables, Mozhabong Lake, Pogamasing, Westree, Stupart, Morin Village and Felix. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. For more information: ontario.ca/page/be-prepared-emergency . 6:51 AM EDT Tuesday 27 August 2024 Rainfall Warning in effect for: Greater Sudbury and vicinity Periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms will bring significant rainfall today. Hazards: Total local rainfall amounts of 50 to 75 mm with locally higher amounts possible. Rainfall rates of 30 to 40 mm per hour possible. Timing: Beginning this morning continuing into tonight. Discussion: Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to track along a stalled front today which will lead to a swath of significant rain. The heaviest rainfall is expected this morning into early this evening. Showers and thunderstorms will continue tonight however they are expected to be lighter. For information concerning flooding, please consult your local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office. Visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Watches 11:08 AM EDT Tuesday 27 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Greater Sudbury and vicinity Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Hazards: Wind gusts up to 100 km/h. Nickel sized hail. Torrential downpours. Risk of tornadoes. Timing: Today continuing into this evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms are expected to develop today and track east. These thunderstorms may be accompanied by wind gusts of 100 km/h and nickel sized hail. There is also a risk of tornadoes. Heavy rain is also expected with these thunderstorms. Please refer to the Rainfall Warnings and Special Weather Statements in effect for details about rainfall. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.
