| Detailed Description | 11:27 AM EDT Tuesday 27 August 2024 Rainfall Warning in effect for: Fort William - Shawville area Rain, at times heavy, is expected. Up to 50 millimetres of rain are expected. However, rainfall amounts could reach up to 75 millimetres locally if several thunderstorms are crossing the same areas. Duration: from this afternoon to early Wednesday morning. The rain may also increase the flow and level of some streams and rivers. Moreover, significant ponding of water is possible on roads and inland. Heavy rainfall in combination with other weather factors, such as hail, wind and lightning will make outdoor activities unsafe. Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. Watches 10:13 AM EDT Tuesday 27 August 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Fort William - Shawville area Today and this evening, conditions will be favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Rainfall amounts of up to 50 millimetres are generally expected. However, total rainfall amounts could reach 75 millimetres locally if several thunderstorms are crossing the same areas. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
