7:52 PM EDT Monday 24 June 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Sandy Lake - Pikangikum Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and damaging hail. Hazards: Wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Nickel to golf ball size hail. Risk of a tornado. Timing: Continuing this evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms will move eastward across northwestern Ontario this evening. These thunderstorms have the potential to become severe, with wind and hail being the most likely hazards. Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
