| Detailed Description | 4:00 AM EDT Tuesday 18 June 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Fort Frances - Rainy Lake Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail. Hazards: Wind gusts up to 90 km/h, large hail and locally heavy rainfall. Timing: Early this morning. Discussion: A line of thunderstorm is expected to move north from northern Minnesota into northwestern Ontario early this morning. Some of the thunderstorms have the potential of becoming severe. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Locally heavy rain is also possible. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Statements 4:47 PM EDT Monday 17 June 2024 Special Weather Statement in effect for: Fort Frances - Rainy Lake Significant rainfall possible Tuesday. Hazards: 40 to 80 mm of rain. Locally higher amounts possible. Discussion: A warm and moist airmass will bring the potential for significant rainfall Tuesday. Two rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected with the first occurring overnight into the morning and the second occurring Tuesday afternoon through the evening. Areas that receive multiple thunderstorms or prolonged rainfall from slow moving thunderstorms may have the potential to exceed 80 mm, locally. At this point, the exact locations for the heaviest rain remains fairly uncertain. Rainfall warnings may be required as confidence grows.
