| Detailed Description | 7:24 PM EDT Monday 16 September 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Upsala - Raith At 6:24 PM CDT (6:24 p.m. EST, 7:24 p.m. EDT), Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a cluster of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts and torrential rain. This cluster of severe thunderstorms is nearly stationary. Hazard: Heavy rainfall with local amounts of 50 to 100 mm. Locations impacted include: Quetico Provincial Park, Quetico, Upsala and Kashabowie Provincial Park. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Avoid driving through water on roads. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Hazards: Wind gusts of 90 km/h Up to toonie sized hail Heavy rain with rainfall rates near 50 mm per hour Timing: This afternoon into this evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms will continue to move across northwestern Ontario this afternoon and evening. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
