5:48 PM EDT Tuesday 21 May 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Ottawa South - Richmond - Metcalfe Ottawa North - Kanata - Orléans At 5:47 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts and heavy rain. This line of severe thunderstorms is located from 8 kilometres southwest of Chelsea to Gloucester to Oxford Mills, moving east at 60 km/h. Hazard: 100 km/h wind gusts Locations impacted include: Ottawa, Kanata, Richmond, Nepean, Rideau River Provincial Park, Kars, Kemptville, Gloucester, Orléans, Metcalfe, Russell, Winchester, Rockland and Bourget. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Hazard: 100 km/h wind gusts Timing: This evening. Discussion: Thunderstorms moving through eastern Ontario have the potential to strengthen this evening. Should these thunderstorms strengthen, the main threat will be strong winds. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.
