Brief Description SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
Detailed Description 12:53 PM EDT Tuesday 18 June 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Superior West Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail. Hazards: Wind gusts up to 100 km/h. Torrential downpours. Risk of tornado. Nickel to ping pong ball sized hail. Timing: Late this afternoon into this evening. Discussion: A line of thunderstorms is expected to develop late this afternoon or early this evening. The main threats will be strong wind gusts as well as torrential downpours. For details on rainfall, please see the rainfall warning or special weather statement that is currently in effect. The environment also supports a tornado risk. While the probability of nickel to ping pong ball sized hail is low, it remains possible. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm . For more information: ontario.ca/page/be-prepared-emergency . Statements 9:10 AM EDT Tuesday 18 June 2024 Special Weather Statement in effect for: Superior West Significant rainfall possible tonight. Hazards: Total rainfall amounts of 30 to 50 mm with locally higher amounts possible. Timing: Beginning late this afternoon into tonight. Discussion: A warm and moist airmass will bring the potential for significant rainfall. There may be some rain late this morning, however, amounts should not be significant. A second round of showers and thunderstorms is expected this evening bringing 30 to 50 mm. At this time the highest rainfall amounts are expected to remain west of the Thunder Bay area, where a rainfall warning is in effect. There is a possibility of these greater rainfall amounts shifting farther east and into the area. If these higher rainfall amounts do shift farther east a rainfall warning will be issued. For information concerning flooding, please consult your local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office. Visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm .
