TORNADO WATCH |
Detailed Description |
5:26 PM EDT Tuesday 18 June 2024 Tornado Warning in effect for: Atikokan - Shebandowan - Quetico Park Upsala - Raith At 4:26 PM CDT (4:26 p.m. EST, 5:26 p.m. EDT), Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms that is possibly producing a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible. A line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes is located from 8 kilometres southeast of Grew Lake to 8 kilometres southeast of McKenzie Lake, moving northeast at 70 km/h. Hazard: Tornado and 90 km/h wind gusts. Locations impacted include: Kashabowie Provincial Park, Burchell Lake, Lac des Mille Lacs, Kashabowie, Greenwater Lake, Kashabowie Lake, Little Athelstane Lake, Savanne, Athelstane Lake, Ricestalk Lake, Sharp Lake, Muskeg Lake and Taman Lake. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Tornadoes could be wrapped in rain and may not be visible. Do not wait to see a funnel cloud. Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Tornado warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing tornadoes. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm . For more information: ontario.ca/page/be-prepared-emergency . 4:55 PM EDT Tuesday 18 June 2024 Rainfall Warning in effect for: Atikokan - Upsala - Quetico Heavy rain is expected. Hazards: Total rainfall amounts of 75 to 150 mm with locally higher amounts possible. Timing: Continuing into this evening. Discussion: A line of severe thunderstorms is bringing torrential rain over the area. The heaviest rain from this line of thunderstorms is locations from east of Lac la Croix, northeast through Upsala to Lake Nipigon. Areas within these thunderstorms have the potential to exceed 150 mm. For information concerning flooding, please consult your local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office. Visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Don''t approach washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm . Watches 5:01 PM EDT Tuesday 18 June 2024 Tornado Watch in effect for: Atikokan - Upsala - Quetico Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes. Strong winds, large hail and heavy rain are also possible. Hazards: Tornadoes possible. Wind gusts up to 100 km/h. Torrential downpours. Nickel to ping pong ball sized hail. Timing: This afternoon into this evening. Discussion: This tornado watch has been upgraded from a severe thunderstorm watch that was previously in effect. A line of thunderstorms is expected to develop this afternoon. Alongside strong wind gusts and torrential downpours, a few tornadoes are possible. For details on rainfall, please see the rainfall warning or special weather statement that is currently in effect. While the probability of nickel to ping pong ball sized hail is low, it remains possible. This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area, it is recommended you take the following actions: Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm .
