11:40 AM EDT Saturday 18 May 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Superior West Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and damaging hail. Hazards: Nickel to golf ball sized hail. Strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h. Timing: This afternoon and early this evening. Discussion: Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon. The primary threats will be toonie sized hail and gusty winds. Stronger, isolated thunderstorms may produce up to golf ball sized hail and wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h. Thunderstorm activity will diminish through the evening. Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
