Brief Description SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
Detailed Description 6:19 PM EDT Thursday 20 June 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for: Halton Hills - Milton Burlington - Oakville At 6:19 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain. This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Cambridge to 9 kilometres east of Bronte, moving east at 15 km/h. Hazard: Heavy downpours with rainfall amounts in excess of 50 mm possible. 90 km/h wind gusts. Locations impacted include: Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Dundas, Waterdown, Rockton, Carlisle, Bronte Creek Provincial Park, Aberfoyle, Valens, Morriston, Puslinch, Westover, Flamborough, Freelton, Mountsberg, Campbellville, Millgrove, Kilbride and North Burlington. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather in Ontario, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm . For more information: ontario.ca/page/be-prepared-emergency . 4:00 PM EDT Thursday 20 June 2024 Heat Warning in effect for: Halton - Peel A prolonged heat event continues through Friday. Dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected. Daytime highs are expected to be 30 to 34 degrees Celsius with humidex values of 40 to 44. There will be little relief through the overnight as lows are expected to be 20 to 23 degrees Celsius with humidex values of 26 to 30. Temperatures and humidex values may be several degrees cooler near the shores of the Great Lakes. Less hot and humid conditions are expected to slowly move into the area this weekend. Daytime highs are expected to be in the 28 to 31 degree Celsius range with overnight lows of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. There is some uncertainty regarding how quick this cooler and drier airmass will move in so heat warnings may persist through the weekend. Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category. Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Heat stroke is a medical emergency! Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you or someone you are caring for has a high body temperature and is confused, has stopped sweating or becomes unconscious. While waiting for help, cool the person right away: move them to a cool place, apply cold water to large areas of the skin and fan the person as much as possible. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm . Watches 6:18 PM EDT Thursday 20 June 2024 Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for: Halton - Peel Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and torrential rain. Hazards: Wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Heavy downpours with rainfall amounts in excess of 50 mm. Brief landspout tornadoes are possible. Timing: This afternoon and evening. Discussion: Areas that receive multiple thunderstorms or prolonged rainfall from slow moving thunderstorms may have the potential to exceed 50 mm locally. Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances. For information concerning flooding, please consult your local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office. Visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details. Rapidly rising rivers and creeks can sweep away bridges, culverts, buildings, and people. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.
