| Detailed Description |
A strong, developing storm force low moving up from the south will bring strong winds, high seas, and heavy rain for the southern panhandle and outer coast. Adjustments in the track of the low will cause different impacts for each part of the panhandle, however, the southern panhandle and outer coast are likely to see the strongest winds at this time. Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph over marine waters and some land areas are likely. Furthermore, rain rates look to maximize around 0.2 to 0.4 inches per hour in the initial frontal band. Confidence is growing that areas in the southern panhandle will see these increased winds and rain rates in the very early hours of Saturday morning. Small streams and rivers are expected to rise across the southern panhandle and will be monitored closely. Beyond the initial frontal band of this system, two scenarios are most likely to occur. The first, less likely scenario sees the system pass south of the southern panhandle, increasing northerly winds across SE AK and limiting moisture across the north. The second, more likely scenario has the system move northward, over the panhandle, and into the Yukon. In this scenario, a strong, southerly push of gale force winds will move up the inner channels followed by a rapid transition to westerly winds as far north as Icy Strait and Juneau. Associated moisture will also work its way northward into colder temperatures. At this time, a mix of rain and snow is expected for sea-level areas north of Stephens Passage; however, it is possible that additional cold air could be pulled from the north causing higher than anticipated snow accumulation.
