10:19 AM MDT Tuesday 21 March 2023 Special air quality statement in effect for: Co. of Minburn near Vegreville Inland and Warwick Co. of Two Hills near Willingdon and Hairy Hill Elk Island Nat. Park Fort Saskatchewan and Nrn Strathcona Co. Lamont Co. near Andrew and Wostok Lamont Co. near Bruderheim Lamont and Peno Creek Lamont Co. near Mundare Chipman and Ukrainian Village Smoky Lake Co. near Smoky Lake and Waskatenau Sturgeon Co. near Bon Accord Gibbons and Namao Sturgeon Co. near Redwater Thorhild Co. near Thorhild Opal and Radway A stagnant weather pattern is causing pollutants to build up near the surface, leading to poor air quality. The air quality will likely be worse during the afternoon and evening hours. The poor air quality may persist for most of the week. Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk. People with lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, can be particularly sensitive to air pollution. They will generally experience more serious health effects at lower levels. Pollution can aggravate their diseases, leading to increased medication use, doctor and emergency room visits, and hospital visits. If you are experiencing symptoms, such as coughing or throat irritation, consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities until the special air quality statement is lifted. Exposure to air pollution is particularly a health concern for people with heart or breathing problems, those with diabetes, children and the elderly. Be air aware!
